Description
NWT residents aged 60 and older can benefit from the Aging in Place program, which will help them reduce their energy costs or do work on their homes to support their independence.
Funding available
A forgivable loan of up to $15,000 is available.
More than one application may be approved per year as long as the repairs are not related and the annual cost of the work does not exceed $15,000.
Claimants with incomes over $59,999 will be required to pay a 10% share of the cost of repairs before repairs begin.
Note: There are other programs available to help you with other types of repairs and improvements to your home.
Deadline
Applications will be available in the summer of 2024.
Applicants will be notified within 60 days of the end of the application period.
Admissibility
You have access to this funding if:
- you are a resident of the NWT;
- you or one of the owners is 60 years of age or older;
- You have lived in the NWT for at least three years.
- You have lived in your home for at least one year.
- You own a home within municipal boundaries and have access to a continuous supply of electricity, drinking water and heat.
- You own a home that has a working wastewater containment system.
- You have a low or average household income below your community's monthly income limit.
How to apply
To apply, you must contact your district office by phone.
You must meet with an advisor at all stages of the application process. They will need to provide you with relevant information on, among other things, the Fuel Tank Replacement Initiative agreement, the responsibilities of homeowners, and the importance of maintaining your tank and having home insurance.
To complete an application form, you will need to be accompanied by a representative of Habitation NWT or one of its designated agents. You are not allowed to fill it out on your own.
