Apprenticeship Program

Overview

To address the shortage of skilled trade workers in the Northwest Territories, Housing NWT funds an apprenticeship training program.

The goal is to help motivated NWT residents to become skilled housing maintainers, plumbers, carpenters, and oil heat systems technicians in their home communities. Local Housing Organizations (LHO) currently employ over 40 journey-certified staff in various trades.

Since 2007, twenty-three (23) LHO apprentices have become Journey Certified.

An apprenticeship typically lasts between three to four years and combines on-the-job training with classes at Aurora College or another post-secondary institution.

Eligibility

The Apprenticeship Program is open to NWT residents who:

  • are NWT residents over the age of 16 years
  • have passed the Trades Entrance Requirements with Education, Culture, and Employment
  • have found a Local Housing Organization willing and able to hire them as an apprentice.

How to Apply

Apprenticeships are funded through Housing NWT and administered through Education, Culture, and Employment (ECE). To find out more, contact a Career Development Officer at your regional ECE Service Centre.
