Homelessness Assistance Fund (HAF) applications will continue to be processed to ensure that residents who are homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless, have an opportunity to access stable housing.  The NWTHC will continue to collaborate closely with GNWT Departments and stakeholders to ensure matters related to homelessness receive prompt attention.

What is the Homelessness Assistance Fund (HAF)?

The Homelessness Assistance Fund (HAF) provides one-time emergency funding to you if you are experiencing a housing-related crisis within the NWT, and as a result are at risk of becoming homeless.

This funding works in partnership with referral agents of community agencies to focus on providing you with practical assistance so you can work with them to solve your crisis, and it can also be used for travel assistance for a person to return to their home community, or another community, where they will no longer be homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless. This funding works in partnership with referral agents of community agencies to focus on providing you with practical assistance so you can work with them to solve your crisis, and it can also be used for travel assistance for a person to return to their home community, or another community, where they will no longer be homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless. It is the responsibility of the traveler to ensure they are in compliance with all government and airline requirements with regards to COVID-19 safety. Please contact your airline if you have any questions.

Who is eligible for the Homelessness Assistance Fund (HAF)?

The Homelessness Assistance Fund Emergency funding support is available for youth and adults if you are facing homelessness to prevent you and your household from becoming homeless, or for assisting you or your household to find affordable and stable housing.

The HAF can be accessed for the following types of assistance:

  • Utility arrears: If arrears affect daily living situation or could result in eviction,
  • Private market rental arrears: If payment of arrears prevents eviction,
  • Damage deposit and first month's rent: Once a lease is signed and you have a confirmed housing unit, and
  • Travel Assistance: One-time one-way travel to a community in which you have guaranteed housing

The Homelessness Assistance Fund is not available to homeowners and cannot be used for:

  • Public Housing arrears,
  • Hotel stays,
  • Continuous monthly rent,
  • Travel for vacation, or
  • Household items or groceries.
