Major Home Repairs for Seniors

Overview

Funding is available for senior homeowners to make necessary health and safety-related repairs to their existing homes to ensure a safe and healthy residence and to increase the useful economic life of their home.

Available Funding

A forgivable loan up to $50,000 is provided.

For applicants whose household income is over $59,999, they will be required to co-pay 10% of the repair costs. The applicant’s portion must be paid prior to the start of the repairs.

Note: Additional funding is available for people with disabilities through the Mobility Modifications Program.

If the repair is under $15,000, the Minor Home Repair Program for Seniors (or Seniors-Aging-in-Place Program) is available.

Deadline

The application intake period is April 1 – October 31, annually.
Applicants will be notified within 60 days of intake deadline.

The annual Major Home Repair Program allocation is limited and based upon available funding. Therefore, not all eligible applicants may be chosen for the program. Clients are selected according to level of need using a points system, called the Housing NWT Priority Allocation and Selection System (PASS).

Eligibility

This funding is open to residents of the NWT who:

  • one of the homeowners are 60 years or older

  • have lived in the NWT for three years

  • have lived in their home for over a year

  • own a home within municipal boundaries and have access to a continuous supply of electricity, potable water and heat

  • own a home where there is a functional sewage containment system

  • have a low-to-middle total household income that falls within the limits of the monthly income threshold for your community.

If an applicant has mortgage, land, lease or tax arrears, your District Office can answer questions on your eligibility.


How to Apply

To apply, you will need to contact your District Office by phone.

Client counselling is required at all stages during the application process. It is necessary to provide applicants with relevant information including the Home Mobility Modification Agreement and homeowner responsibilities, including the importance of home maintenance and home insurance.

All applicants are required to complete an application form with a representative from Housing NWT or its designated agent.

Applicants are not permitted to complete the application on their own.

The Housing NWT District Technical Advisors will be responsible for coordinating the maintenance and minor repair projects, including the Scope of Work
