Public Housing

What is the Public Housing Program?

The Northwest Territories Housing Corporation (NWTHC) Public Housing program provides income-based assistance for residents of more than 2400 Public Housing units located in thirty (30) NWT communities.

Housing services are delivered to residents by community partners (Local Housing Organizations (LHOs)) through Partnership Agreements with the NWTHC, and include financial administration, tenant relations, and operations and maintenance.

Who Can apply for the Public Housing Program?

If you have a low-to-middle total household income that falls within the limits of the monthly income threshold for your community, you can apply.

If you are a Senior Adult, (60 years and older) you can apply at any time for assistance under any housing program.

What funding is available?

Your rent is based on the total incomes of people living in your household.

Rental amounts vary according to the Public Housing Rent Scale.  No household pays rent that is less than $70 per month or more than $1,625 per month. Residents who are Seniors receive up to a $1,000 per month deduction from their income and will have a portion of their income excluded for their rent calculation.

The NWTHC’s Public Housing Rent scale makes your rent simpler and more predictable, increases fairness and consistency amongst NWT communities based on the community’s cost of living, and supports your self-reliance as a tenant.

It is designed to help reduce your cost of living in NWT communities, to increase your personal responsibility for your shelter costs, and to encourage your participation in employment if employment is available in your community.
